Sisterhood Shabbat
Each year many of our Sisterhood members take on new challenges and learn new parts of the Shabbat service. They might learn a Torah portion for the first time, or maybe chant the haftorah. Each year, we invite the congregation to join us at Sisterhood Shabbat during Mother's Day weekend.

TEMPLE BETH EL SISTERHOOD PRESENTS
WEDDING CANOPY (CHUPPAH) TO CONGREGATION

For the past eight years, Temple Beth El Sisterhood members have been stitching away to complete four panels of a wedding canopy (chuppah) for the congregation. This beautiful custom-designed work of art was presented to the temple in May at the annual Sisterhood Shabbat morning service at Temple Beth El.

This extensive needlepoint project, coordinated by Sisterhood member Shellie Gordon, involved countless hours and numerous volunteers. The chuppah started with 14 original pieces which were later sewn together.

The design features various wedding symbols including doves carrying a ribbon with Hebrew words that translate to mean, "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine," a bride and groom, a ketubah (Jewish wedding contract), a menorah and a bible. A Philadelphia artist helped design the artwork for this one of a kind chuppah.

When the chuppah is not being used for wedding ceremonies at Temple Beth El, each of the 4 panels will be framed and displayed outside the sanctuary. Each panel is 6 feet long and 18 inches high.

As part of the celebration, congregants were invited to bring their wedding pictures to the temple. These photos were displayed in the social hall during the luncheon following services on Saturday, May 13, 2006.

For more information about the new chuppah, you may call Temple Beth El at (717) 581-7891.
