Who can study: no previous knowledge is needed to be part of this course. English translation of the text will be used, so no Hebrew or Aramaic is needed (although it will be appreciated).
Course Description: During this course we will study Masechet Brachot (the Babylonian Tracte of Brachot/Blessings). We will meet for one hour each week at the Temple. A computer will be set up for each class, so students can join remotely if they need/prefer.
Each class will be divided in two parts: During the first part students will study in small groups (in chevrutah) and during the second part we will all gather to re-read and discuss the material. The goal of this course is to learn the material from the Talmud as well as gain basic skills and tools in Talmud study.
Teacher: Rabbi Rami Pavolotzky
When? Every Wednesday, 10:30 to 11:30 am, starting on October 6th and ending on May 25th. There will be no classes on December 29th and January 5th (Winter break), March 16th (Erev Purim) and April 20th (Pesach Break).
Where? We will meet in the social hall of Temple Beth El, so we can sit spread out. We will follow the guidelines of Temple Beth El Pandemic Task Force. Students can join remotely if they need/prefer.
Text Book:
We will use the Noé Edition Koren Talmud Bavli, Berakhot, Vol.1, which features the commentaries and many additional explanations by Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz.
The book can be ordered online at Koren, Amazon, or at many Judaica Stores websites. There are different options: hard cover, paperback (which come in four different booklets) and PDF edition. Rabbi Rami will be happy to help you choose the best option for you.
If you prefer not to buy any edition, you can always follow the Talmud text online for free from Sefaria, which includes the original text and Rabbi Steinsaltz English translation.
